Sedum 'Mini Joy' – Compact Pink Stonecrop
- Description
Neat clumps of fleshy, blue-green leaves are topped in late summer by flat heads of vivid pink starry florets, deepening to rich reddish tones as autumn wears on. A compact, well-behaved sedum that brings colour to the border just when most other perennials are winding down — and a magnet for the last bees and butterflies of the season.
Plant from April to May at 5–10 cm deep, spacing plants 40–50 cm apart to give each clump room to spread. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil — sedum thrives on lean ground and resents waterlogged conditions, which can cause the crown to rot. Once established, 'Mini Joy' is remarkably drought-tolerant and needs almost no attention beyond cutting back the old stems in late winter. Fully hardy across the Baltic region. Leave the faded flower heads standing through winter for attractive structure and a little extra shelter for overwintering insects.
One of the best late-season pollinator plants you can grow. When most other flowers have gone over, 'Mini Joy' is still covered in bees, butterflies, and hoverflies stocking up before winter. Plant in small groups near seating areas to enjoy the gentle hum, and pair with asters, rudbeckias, and ornamental grasses for a wildlife-friendly autumn display that looks beautiful even after the first frosts.
