Sedum spectabile 'Brilliant' – Deep Pink Stonecrop
- Description
Compact, low clumps of fleshy blue-green leaves are crowned in late summer by broad, flat umbels of intense amaranth-pink flowers — a classic, almost impossible-to-kill perennial that lights up the garden just as other plants begin to tire. 'Brilliant' is a stalwart of dry banks and gravel gardens, utterly drought-tolerant once settled, and alive with bees and butterflies throughout its long flowering season.
Plant bare roots from April to May at 5–10 cm deep, spacing plants 30–40 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil — sedum thrives on lean ground and dry banks, but resents waterlogged conditions which cause the crown to rot. Once established, 'Brilliant' is remarkably drought-tolerant and needs almost no attention. Fully hardy across the Baltic region. Leave the faded flower heads standing through winter for attractive structure and extra shelter for overwintering insects; cut back in early spring to make way for new growth.
One of the best late-season pollinator plants you can grow — when most other flowers have gone over, 'Brilliant' is still alive with bees and butterflies stocking up before winter. The flat flower heads also dry beautifully: cut stems when the colour is at its peak and hang upside-down in a dark, airy place. The papery umbels keep their form and a soft russet-pink colour for months, making striking additions to dried wreaths and autumnal arrangements.
