Phlox paniculata 'Cool Water' – Pale Pink Garden Phlox
- Description
Conical panicles open almost white with the faintest pink blush, then deepen into a soft pastel pink as the blooms mature — a gentle, shifting palette that keeps the border looking fresh for weeks on end. 'Cool Water' carries its fragrant flowers on sturdy, upright stems above long green leaves, and its scent perfumes summer evenings from July through September.
Plant in April–May or in early autumn in fertile, moderately moist, well-drained soil. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with good air circulation — this reduces the risk of powdery mildew, phlox's main nuisance. Water deeply at the base during dry spells and avoid wetting the foliage. A spring mulch keeps roots cool and locks in moisture. Deadhead spent panicles promptly to encourage a second flush of flowers later in the season. Fully frost-hardy across the Baltic region, the clumps improve year on year and can be lifted and divided every 3–4 years to keep them vigorous.
Cut when around half the florets on the panicle have opened — the rest will continue to unfurl in the vase for 5–7 days of fragrant bloom. Sear the stem ends briefly in hot water to improve water uptake. The evolving white-to-pink palette makes 'Cool Water' a beautiful partner to roses, cosmos, and grasses in romantic summer bouquets.
