Pelargonium 'Uaito Ringu' – Variegated Rosebud Geranium
- Description
A rare Japanese variegated pelargonium that arrived in Europe only a few years ago — the freshness of an 'Appleblossom Rosebud' with the added refinement of variegated foliage. Apple-green zonal leaves are edged in a fine creamy-white margin, and the densely petalled rosebud-form flowers open white with delicate pink edges, like miniature antique roses. Vigorous, upright, and beautifully compound, with a long flowering season from early spring well into autumn. We have a limited number of specimens of this collector's variety.
Your plant arrives well-branched and ready to be potted on into a slightly larger container with good-quality, free-draining compost. In the Baltic climate, keep it indoors on a bright windowsill through winter, then move outside from late May once all frost has passed — partial shade with some morning sun gives the cleanest variegation and the most flowers. Water when the top of the compost feels dry; pelargoniums dislike sitting in wet feet. Feed fortnightly through the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Bring back indoors in early October before the first frost. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to keep new buds coming, and pinch out leggy stems to maintain a bushy, well-branched habit.
Variegated pelargoniums occasionally produce shoots that revert to plain green — these reverted shoots are more vigorous and, if left in place, will gradually take over and the plant will lose its distinctive cream margin. Inspect your plant regularly during the growing season, and as soon as you spot a fully green shoot, cut it cleanly back to its base. This simple bit of gardener's vigilance keeps 'Uaito Ringu' true to its variegated form for years to come.
