Lupinus 'Noble Maiden' – White Russell Lupin
- Description
Tall, densely packed spires of pure white pea-like flowers rise like candles above handsome clumps of palmate foliage — one of the purest whites in the Russell lupin range and a classic choice for brightening a shaded border or weaving luminous accents through a naturalistic planting. A true cottage-garden centrepiece, and a magnet for early-summer bees.
Plant bare roots in April or May at 6–8 cm deep, spacing plants 20–25 cm apart. Lupins prefer fertile, moist but well-drained soil on the slightly acidic side; heavy clay or alkaline ground rarely suits them. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position sheltered from strong winds, as the tall spires can catch the breeze. As members of the pea family, lupins fix their own nitrogen, so avoid nitrogen-rich feeds. Cut back the main spike after flowering to encourage a smaller second flush later in the season. Fully frost-hardy across the Baltic region; the clumps return reliably each spring and reach their full glory in their second and third years. Plants look their best grouped in threes or fives.
All parts of the lupin plant — especially the seed pods — contain alkaloids that are toxic if eaten by people or pets. The pea-like pods can be tempting to curious children and dogs, so plant with care and remove spent flower spikes before they set seed if this is a concern in your garden.
