Lupinus 'The Chatelaine' – Pink Russell Lupin
- Description
Tall, architectural spires packed with candy-pink and white bicolour florets rise cleanly above a handsome clump of palmate, green leaves — the essence of an English cottage-garden border. 'The Chatelaine' is one of the classic Russell lupins, prized for its refined colouring and its ability to draw bees in their dozens throughout its early-summer bloom.
Plant bare roots in April or May at 6–8 cm deep, spacing plants 20–30 cm apart. Lupins prefer fertile, moist but well-drained soil on the slightly acidic side; heavy clay or alkaline ground rarely suits them. Choose a sunny spot sheltered from strong winds — the tall spires can catch the breeze. As members of the pea family, lupins fix their own nitrogen in the soil, so avoid nitrogen-rich feeds. Cut the main spike back after flowering and a second, smaller flush often follows. Fully frost-hardy across the Baltic region; plants return vigorously each spring and look their best in their second and third years. Plant in generous groups of three or more for the strongest visual impact.
All parts of the lupin plant — especially the seed pods — contain alkaloids that are toxic if eaten by people or pets. The pea-like pods can be tempting to curious children and dogs, so plant with care and remove spent flower spikes before they set seed if this is a concern in your garden.
