Delphinium × cultorum 'Pacific Giant' – Tall Larkspur Mix
- Description
Majestic spires densely packed with florets in deep blue, soft pink, and pure white rise well above the rest of the border — a classic cottage-garden silhouette and one of the tallest perennials you can grow from seed. The Pacific Giant strain is beloved for its vigour, jewel-toned colour range, and exceptional performance as both a statement border plant and a dramatic cut flower.
Delphiniums germinate best in cool conditions — chill the seed packet in the fridge for 1–2 weeks before sowing to improve success rates. Sow 0.5–1 cm deep under cover from May to June, then transplant seedlings to their final spot in September, spacing plants 50 × 50 cm apart in fertile, moist, well-drained soil and a sunny position. The tall spires absolutely need staking before they get heavy — put supports in early, before the plants fill out. Feed generously in spring and water deeply during dry spells. Cut the main spike right back after flowering to encourage a smaller second flush. Expect the first flowers in the second year. Fully hardy across the Baltic region.
Cut when around one-third of the florets on the spike have opened; expect 5–7 days of vase life, with the remaining buds continuing to open indoors. A truly dramatic cut flower that adds height and jewel-toned colour to summer arrangements. Important: all parts of the delphinium plant are highly toxic if ingested, and the seeds in particular are dangerous. Plant with care in gardens shared with young children or pets, and always wash your hands after handling the stems.
