Lagurus ovatus – Bunny Tails Grass
- Description
Soft, egg-shaped plumes, as fluffy as a rabbit's tail, nod on slender stems above fine green foliage — one of the most tactile and charming ornamental grasses you can grow. Quick, easy, and rewarding, 'Bunny Tails' is equally beloved in summer borders, container arrangements, and as a cornerstone of dried bouquets, where its soft cream plumes dry beautifully and last for years.
One of the simplest grasses to grow from seed. Sow just 0.5–1 cm deep from April to May, either direct into warm soil or in pots under cover for an earlier start. Thin or transplant seedlings to roughly 10 × 20 cm spacing in a sunny spot with light, well-drained soil — bunny tails actively dislike heavy or waterlogged ground. Once established, they tolerate dry spells well and need little care beyond occasional weeding. Naturally disease-resistant and beautiful in pots, gravel gardens, or at the front of a border, where their fluffy plumes catch every breath of breeze.
A florist's favourite, equally lovely fresh or dried. Cut the stems when the plumes have reached full size but are still soft and green — harvested too late, they begin to shed. For drying, bundle loosely and hang upside-down in a dark, airy place for 1–2 weeks; the plumes hold their soft texture and mellow to warm cream, keeping their beauty for years. They can also be bleached pure white or dyed in pastel tones for modern bouquets and wreaths.
