Phlox paniculata 'Windsor' – Deep Pink Garden Phlox
- Description
Large, fluffy panicles of deep carmine-pink, each tiny flower centred with a darker magenta eye, held on strong upright stems above a curtain of dark green foliage. 'Windsor' holds its head high even in summer gusts and perfumes the evening garden with a sweet, old-fashioned fragrance. A classic border plant at its most dramatic in mid to late summer.
Plant bare roots in April or May at 8–10 cm deep, spacing plants 20–30 cm apart. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with fertile, moderately moist, well-drained soil and good air circulation — the latter helps prevent powdery mildew, phlox's main nuisance. Water deeply at the base during dry spells and avoid wetting the foliage. A spring mulch keeps roots cool and locks in moisture. Deadhead spent panicles promptly to encourage a second flush of flowers. Fully frost-hardy across the Baltic region; the clumps return vigorously each spring and can be lifted and divided every 3–4 years to keep them at their best.
Cut when around half the tiny flowers on the panicle have opened — the rest will continue to unfurl in the vase for 5–7 days of fragrant bloom. Sear the stem ends briefly in hot water to improve water uptake. The deep pink of 'Windsor' makes a bold statement in summer bouquets and pairs beautifully with white phlox, roses, and soft grasses for romantic cottage arrangements that carry the scent of a summer evening indoors.
