Echinops ritro – Globe Thistle
- Description
Globes of steel-blue florets rise on tall, silvery stems — each one a tiny planet orbiting above the border. A magnet for bees and butterflies from midsummer onwards, Echinops holds its colour and form long after cutting, making it equally prized for fresh bouquets and dried winter arrangements.
Easy, generous, and drought-tolerant once established. Sow at a depth of 2–3 cm, either under cover in early spring or direct into warm soil from March to May. Transplant or thin to roughly 60 × 50 cm spacing so each clump has room to develop its architectural form. Echinops actually prefers poor, well-drained ground in full sun — rich soil tends to produce floppy stems. Deadhead spent globes to encourage a second flush, or leave late blooms standing for winter structure and self-seeding. Highly disease-resistant and largely ignored by deer and rabbits.
Cut when the globes have coloured up fully but before the tiny florets open — stems last longer in the vase this way and hold their steel-blue brilliance best. For drying, hang stems upside-down in a dark, airy spot; the spheres keep their shape and colour for months, making striking additions to winter wreaths and arrangements. Pairs beautifully with yarrow, lavender, and ornamental grasses.
