Dahlia 'Impression Famoso' – Anemone-Flowered Dahlia
- Description
Soft white petals flushed with the gentlest pink surround a plush, golden-yellow cushion of tubular florets — the open, anemone-flowered form gives 'Impression Famoso' a relaxed, wildflower charm that slips easily into any border. Its pale colouring acts as a natural foil to stronger shades nearby, while the accessible flower form keeps bees and butterflies coming back all summer.
Start tubers indoors in pots from early April to get a head start, then plant out in late May once all danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil and set each tuber 5–7 cm deep with the eyes facing upward, spaced 30–40 cm apart. Stake early — the hollow stems can snap in summer wind. Deadhead regularly to keep the blooms coming right through to the first autumn frost. In the Baltic climate, dahlias will not survive winter in the ground: lift the tubers after the first frost blackens the foliage, let them dry, and store in a cool, frost-free place until spring. Also thrives in large pots on a sunny balcony or terrace.
Anemone-flowered dahlias are among the best dahlias for pollinators — the open, cushioned centre gives bees and butterflies easy access to nectar and pollen, unlike the densely petalled ball or decorative types. For cutting, harvest in the cool of the morning when flowers are three-quarters open; plunge stems into deep cold water and expect 5–7 days of vase life. The soft blush-white tones bring lightness to mixed bouquets and pair beautifully with cosmos, sweet peas, and grasses for a relaxed, natural look.
