Dahlia 'Fenna Baaij' – Anemone-Flowered Dahlia
- Description
A single ring of pale pink petals encircles a generous, raised cushion of tiny tubular florets in warm golden tones — the hallmark of the anemone-flowered dahlia, and a genuinely sculptural combination of textures within a single flower. 'Fenna Baaij' keeps a compact, tidy habit and flowers steadily from midsummer to the first frosts, bringing a light, contemporary presence to perennial borders and prairie-style plantings.
Start tubers indoors in pots from early April to get a head start, then plant out in late May once all danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil and set each tuber 5–10 cm deep with the eyes facing upward, spaced 50–60 cm apart. Stake early — the hollow stems can snap in summer wind. Deadhead regularly to keep the blooms coming right through to the first autumn frost. In the Baltic climate, dahlias will not survive winter in the ground: lift the tubers after the first frost blackens the foliage, let them dry, and store in a cool, frost-free place until spring.
Anemone-flowered dahlias are among the best dahlias for pollinators — the open, cushioned centre gives bees and butterflies easy access to nectar and pollen. For cutting, harvest in the cool of the morning when flowers are three-quarters open; plunge stems into deep cold water and expect 5–7 days of vase life. The soft pink petals and textured golden centre bring quiet elegance to lighter, natural-style bouquets, and pair especially well with ornamental grasses, sweet peas, and white cosmos.
