Dahlia 'Bayou' – Anemone-Flowered Dahlia
- Description
Rich purple-pink outer petals surround a dense, domed cushion of darker tubular florets — the hallmark of the anemone-flowered dahlia, and a striking contrast of textures within a single bloom. 'Bayou' flowers prolifically from midsummer to the first frosts, bringing bold, jewel-toned colour and strong vertical presence to sunny borders and cutting gardens alike.
Start tubers indoors in pots from late winter to early spring for a head start, then plant out in late May once all danger of frost has passed. Plant horizontally at around 10–12 cm deep with the eyes facing upwards, giving each tuber plenty of room to spread. Feed with a high-nitrogen liquid feed weekly in June while growth establishes, then switch to a high-potash feed weekly from July through September to fuel flowering. Stake with canes or brushwood as the plant grows. In the Baltic climate, dahlias will not survive winter in the ground: lift the tubers after the first frost blackens the foliage, let them dry naturally, then store in trays of lightly moistened compost, sand or vermiculite in a cool, frost-free place until spring.
Cut in the cool of the morning when the flower is about three-quarters open; dahlias don't continue to open much in the vase once cut. Plunge stems straight into deep cold water and expect 5–7 days of vase life. The open, cushioned centre of 'Bayou' gives bees and butterflies easy access to pollen, making it a good wildlife choice as well. Pairs beautifully with rich burgundy foliage, grasses, and softer pink dahlias for moody late-summer arrangements.
