Dahlia 'Bashful' – Collarette Dahlia
- Description
Velvety petals shade from deep burgundy at the base through to softer pink at the edges, all gathered around a bright yellow centre — a subtle, painterly palette with real depth of colour. 'Bashful' strikes the perfect medium height, making it equally at home at the front of a mixed border or in a generous pot on the terrace, and it flowers reliably from midsummer to the first frosts.
Start tubers indoors in pots from early April to get a head start, then plant out in late May once all danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny spot with rich, well-drained soil and set each tuber 5–7 cm deep with the eyes facing upward, spaced 40–50 cm apart. Stake early — the hollow stems can snap in summer wind. Deadhead regularly to keep the blooms coming right through to autumn. In the Baltic climate, dahlias will not survive winter in the ground: lift the tubers after the first frost blackens the foliage, let them dry, and store in a cool, frost-free place until spring. Also thrives in large pots on a sunny balcony or terrace.
Cut in the cool of the morning when the flower is about three-quarters open — collarette dahlias don't continue to open much in the vase. Plunge stems into deep, cold water straight away, and expect 5–7 days of vase life. The subtle burgundy-pink palette is beautifully suited to sophisticated, moody arrangements — pair with dusty pink cosmos, bronze foliage, and silver grasses for bouquets with real depth.
