Curcuma 'Rose' – Ornamental Pink Turmeric
- Description
Striking cone-shaped spikes of glowing pink bracts rise straight from the rhizome on slender stems, framed by an elegant clump of broad, lance-shaped green leaves — an exotic tropical beauty that brings the feel of a Thai garden to a windowsill, balcony, or sheltered terrace. The ornamental cousin of culinary turmeric, grown purely for its long-lasting, sculptural blooms.
Plant rhizomes in April or May, 8–10 cm deep and 20 cm apart, in a rich, free-draining potting mix. Containers are ideal — choose a pot with good drainage holes and place in a warm spot in bright, filtered light; avoid harsh direct midday sun. Water regularly once leaves appear and keep the compost evenly moist but never waterlogged, which would rot the rhizome. Feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season. In the Baltic climate, curcuma is not winter-hardy: as autumn arrives and the foliage begins to die back, reduce watering, lift the rhizome, and overwinter it dry in a cool spot that stays above 10 °C until replanting in spring.
The long-lasting pink bracts make exquisite exotic cut flowers — cut stems last 10–14 days in the vase, far longer than most summer blooms. Harvest when the cone is fully coloured and plunge immediately into deep water. The tropical, sculptural form pairs beautifully with monstera or palm foliage for a distinctly modern, designer look that instantly elevates any arrangement.
