Cosmos bipinnatus 'Tetra Versailles' – Tall Cosmos Mix
- Description
Tall, airy stems carry large silken blooms in a painterly mix of pink, rose, carmine, and pure white — each flower a simple ring of broad petals around a golden eye. 'Tetra Versailles' is one of the classic tall cosmos mixes, bred for larger-than-average flowers on sturdy stems that stand up to summer wind and rain, making it equally at home at the back of a border or in the cutting patch.
Among the easiest annuals you can grow. Sow seeds just 0.5 cm deep from April to May, directly into warm soil once all frost has passed, or start earlier indoors for a head start. Thin or transplant seedlings to 30 × 30 cm spacing in a sunny spot. Cosmos actively prefers moderately lean soil — too much richness gives you lush leaves and fewer flowers. Deadhead regularly to keep blooms coming right through to the first frost. Tall varieties benefit from light staking or being grown in the shelter of other plants. Largely disease- and pest-free, and a magnet for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies.
One of the most productive cut flowers in the summer garden — the more you cut, the more the plant produces. Harvest in the cool of the morning when buds are just starting to open, and expect 5–7 days in the vase. Cosmos pairs beautifully with dahlias, zinnias, and ammi in loose, romantic arrangements, and their airy stems add movement to any bouquet.
