Convallaria majalis 'Prolificans' – Lily of the Valley
- Description
A rare, double-flowered form of the beloved Lily of the Valley — the same sweet, unmistakable fragrance and dainty bell-shaped blooms, but with petals more densely packed along each stem for a fuller, more romantic display. Slowly spreads into a lush green carpet beneath trees and in shaded borders, returning reliably year after year.
Plant pips in early spring or early autumn, setting each one upright with the pointed bud just 2–3 cm below the soil surface and spacing them around 10 cm apart. Choose a shaded or semi-shaded spot with cool, moist, humus-rich soil — beneath trees, along a shady border, or in a woodland corner is ideal. A mulch of leaf mould in autumn mimics their natural habitat and keeps them happy. Water through dry spells in the first year; once established, 'Prolificans' is fully hardy and spreads slowly into a dense, weed-suppressing carpet that returns more generously every year.
All parts of Lily of the Valley are highly toxic if ingested — flowers, leaves, berries, and roots alike. Plant with care in gardens shared with young children or pets, and always wash hands after handling. The sweetly scented blooms make exquisite small posies for the home but should be kept well out of reach.
