Briza maxima – Greater Quaking Grass
- Description
Delicate, heart-shaped spikelets dangle from slender stems like tiny papery lockets, quivering at the slightest breath of wind — the name really does say it all. This airy annual grass brings movement and a light, enchanting texture to summer borders, and its spikelets ripen from green to warm straw gold, holding their form beautifully in both fresh and dried arrangements.
One of the easiest annuals you can grow — perfect for first-time gardeners. Sow seeds just 1 cm deep from April to May, directly into warm soil in a sunny position with humus-rich, well-drained ground. Thin seedlings to roughly 10 × 20 cm spacing so each plant has room to form its characteristic airy clumps. Requires almost no watering or feeding and naturally resists disease. Often self-seeds gently once established, gifting you new plants in following years. Lovely at the front of a border, scattered through a meadow planting, or in gravel gardens.
A florist favourite, equally lovely fresh or dried. For dried arrangements, cut when the spikelets are fully formed but still soft and green, or wait for the warm golden-straw stage for autumnal tones. Hang bundles upside-down in a dark, airy place for 1–2 weeks; the papery lockets keep their form and colour for years. In fresh bouquets, the trembling spikelets add gentle movement and a touch of wild meadow charm alongside cornflowers, cosmos, and roses.
Guaranteed fresh.
