Aster dumosus 'Apollo' – White Bushy Aster
- Description
Compact, semi-spherical clumps disappear under a blanket of small white daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centres — pure and luminous, the colour of fresh starlight at the front of an autumn border. 'Apollo' brings a generous lift to garden compositions just as the season starts to fade, providing crucial late food for bees and butterflies and bridging the garden gracefully into autumn.
Plant bare roots from March to May at 10–12 cm deep, spacing plants 20–30 cm apart. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with fertile, moist but well-drained soil and good air circulation — bushy asters are slightly prone to powdery mildew, which good airflow keeps at bay. Water during dry spells, especially while plants are establishing. Pinch back the growing tips in early summer (the so-called "Chelsea chop") for an even more compact, floriferous habit. Fully frost-hardy across the Baltic region; lift and divide every 3–4 years in spring to keep clumps fresh and vigorous.
One of the most valuable autumn pollinator plants in the garden — asters provide a critical last meal for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies before winter. Plant in generous drifts at the front of a border or as edging along paths to maximise the wildlife impact, and pair with sedums, rudbeckias, and ornamental grasses for a classic late-season composition that hums with life right into October.
