Aruncus dioicus – Goat's Beard
- Description
Spreading clumps of feathery, deeply divided foliage send up tall stems crowned with airy, cream-white plumes — like an enormous, elegant astilbe seen from across the garden. Goat's beard is a stately presence in larger borders, woodland edges, and damp ground near ponds, where its size and architectural form anchor naturalistic plantings beautifully.
Plant bare roots from April to June at 10–15 cm deep, spacing plants 50–60 cm apart to allow each clump room to develop fully. Choose a part-shaded spot with rich, moisture-retentive soil — goat's beard appreciates a bit of dappled light and dislikes hot, dry conditions. Particularly happy in damp ground near ponds, streams, or in woodland borders. Water deeply during dry spells, especially while establishing in the first year. A spring mulch of leaf mould or compost holds moisture and feeds the soil. Fully frost-hardy across the Baltic region, the clumps return reliably each spring and grow more impressive over time. Cut back the dead foliage in late winter to make way for fresh growth.
An anchor plant for naturalistic and woodland-style gardens. The bold form sits beautifully alongside hostas, ferns, astilbes, and ligularias in part-shade compositions, and the seed heads remain attractive long after the flowers fade — leave them standing into autumn for added structure. The flowers also draw bees and hoverflies in midsummer, when many shaded gardens have less to offer pollinators.
