Anemone coronaria 'The Bride' – White Poppy Anemone
- Description
Pure white petals gathered around a soft greenish-yellow centre, carried on slender stems above a rosette of finely cut leaves — the very essence of simplicity and grace. 'The Bride' is a classic single-flowered anemone that brings quiet luminosity to summer borders and looks at its most magical planted in generous drifts. Equally at home in a naturalistic garden or in a bridal bouquet.
Soak the dry corms in cool water for 3–4 hours before planting — they'll plump up visibly and establish far more reliably. Plant 6–8 cm deep and 10 cm apart in April or May, in fertile, well-drained soil and a sunny or lightly shaded spot. Anemones dislike waterlogged ground, so raised beds or containers are ideal in heavy soils. 'The Bride' needs protection through Baltic winters: either lift the corms in autumn and store dry, or cover generously with mulch or fleece during the coldest periods. Plant in groups of ten or more for the best visual effect.
Cut in the morning when the buds are just beginning to show their colour — the blooms will open fully in the vase and last up to 10 days. 'The Bride' is a beloved wedding flower for obvious reasons: its clean white simplicity pairs beautifully with ranunculus, sweet peas, and soft greenery in romantic summer bouquets. Expect the stems to continue growing and gently turning towards the light once arranged.
