Achillea millefolium 'Terracotta' – Terracotta Yarrow
- Description
Flat umbels open in warm, earthy rust-orange, then slowly soften through apricot into antique gold — a single plant carries every shade at once, giving the border a constantly shifting palette through summer. 'Terracotta' lifts its compact, upright heads cleanly above airy, finely cut foliage, sitting beautifully among grasses and prairie-style perennials.
Plant bare roots from March to May at 10–15 cm deep, spacing each one 20–30 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with lean, well-drained soil — 'Terracotta' actively prefers poor ground and will flop in rich or overly moist conditions. Drought-tolerant once established and fully frost-hardy across the Baltic region, so it returns reliably each spring without winter protection. Cut back spent flower heads in midsummer to encourage a second flush. Also performs well in containers, where it mingles beautifully with other drought-tolerant perennials.
Cut when the umbels are fully open and showing pollen — stems taken too early will wilt. Expect 7–10 days of vase life in fresh water. The warm rust and gold tones are exceptional for drying: hang bunches upside-down in a dark, airy place, and the heads hold their colour and form beautifully through winter. A signature ingredient in autumn-toned dried wreaths and bouquets.
