Achillea millefolium 'Lilac Beauty' – Lilac Yarrow
- Description
Flat umbels of soft lilac florets are held on slender upright stems above a mound of dark, ferny foliage — a quieter, more romantic take on the familiar yarrow. 'Lilac Beauty' carries itself with a natural lightness that blends beautifully into cottage borders, rock gardens, and any relaxed planting scheme, while its long bloom season keeps the display going from early summer to the first frosts.
Plant bare roots from March to May at 10–15 cm deep, spacing each one 25–30 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with lean, well-drained soil — yarrow actively prefers poor ground and will flop in overly rich or moist conditions. Drought-tolerant once established and one of the most undemanding perennials you can grow. Cut back spent flower heads in midsummer to prompt a second flush of bloom. Fully frost-hardy across the Baltic region; clumps return reliably each spring and can be lifted and divided every three or four years to keep them vigorous.
Cut when the umbels are fully open and showing pollen — stems taken too early will wilt. Expect 7–10 days of vase life in fresh water. The soft lilac tones are particularly lovely alongside roses, lavender, and silvery foliage in romantic summer bouquets. For drying, hang bunches upside-down in a dark, airy place; the flat heads hold their form beautifully in winter arrangements.
